چکیده

Sixteen working welders with more than seven years' exposure and a chest radiograph suggestive of siderosis and I3 healthy unexposed men were studied. Each subject had a comprehensive medical and work history, physical examination, standard chest film, and pulmonary function investigation (lung volumes, ventilatory capacities, pulmonary compliance in static and dynamic conditions, specific compliance, and elastic work of breathing). Seven of the welders had some exertional dyspnoea and three complained of cough. Although spirographic values were generally within the normal range, the arc welders had a statistically significant reduction in static and functional compliance. Seven had a functional compliance under the lower limit of the control group. Differences in elastic work of breathing and specific compliance were not significant. The possible causes of pulmonary function impairment in welders are discussed.

Longitudinal change in magnetopneumographic measurements in Japanese arc welders, in relation with working conditions, pulmonary function, and chest x-ray findings

Welding work is associated with the inhalation of fumes and accumulation of particulates in welders' lungs. It is assumed that particulates deposited in the respiratory system, mainly consisting of iron oxides, are eliminated by several mechanisms, such as muco-ciliary transport and macrophage phagocytosis. In their cross-sectional study of 42 Finnish shipyard arc welders, Kalliomäki et al. ind...

Thin-Section CT Findings of Arc-Welders' Pneumoconiosis

OBJECTIVE To describe the thin-section CT findings of arc-welders' pneumoconiosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-five arc-welders with a three to 30 (mean, 15)- year history of exposure underwent thin-section CT scanning. The extent of abnormalities detected was correlated with the severity of dyspnea and pulmonary function tests. For comparison, images of 43 smoking males (mean 25 pack-year) ...

What do we know today about welding-fume effects on the respiratory system?

The purpose of this review of the last ten years' publications was to show our nresent knowledge ahout welding-fume effects on the respiratory system. Welding generates particles and gases which are characteristic for the method used and the material welded. Various investigations to determine if respiratory system diseases occur more often in welders than in others not exposed have yielded div...

[Pulmonary siderosis in an arc welder].

An arc welder of 32 years of age is presented with a random finding of miliar reticulonodular shadows in the plain film of the thorax. Subjectively and objectively the patient appears healthy. The presence of a pneumoconiosis is confirmed by biopsy. Differential diagnosis had to consider sarcoidosis and pulmonary siderosis in view of the known professional anamnesis. This case report underlines...
